World Okapi Day
18 October 2025
World Okapi Day (18 October) is a chance to celebrate one of the Congo Basin’s most extraordinary and secretive animals—as well as the people dedicated to its protection. This year, the Okapi Conservation Project is leading celebrations in and around the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, bringing together community members and schoolchildren for activities that build pride, awareness, and connection to the species.

In 2025, conservationists are also turning their attention to new ground. The Rubi-Télé region, a lesser-studied area to the west of the core okapi strongholds, has seen confirmation of wild okapi presence and is now the focus of a feasibility study by Antwerp Zoo’s conservation branch. This shows how efforts continue to evolve and adapt as we learn more about the full range and needs of the species.
